RHODES SCHOLAR BACK
KALAUGHER ON HOLIDAY W. G. Kalaugher, tho 1927 New Zealand Rhodes Scholar, is spending a holiday with his parents in Auckland prior to returning to England to take up a teaching engagement. Kalaugher is probably tho best all-round athlete tho Dominion has sent Homo as a Rhodes Scholar. Ho played a prominent part in athletics in Auckland before leaving for Oxford, where ho ran tho following year against Cambridge "University. He won tho 120 yards hurdles event at Oxford in 1928 and 1931. He played Rugby in 1928 for the Greyhounds, a University Club, and also for the Northampton Club. Ho started playing tho following year, but ho sprained his ankle twice and also dislocated his.shoulder and that finished his football career for the time being. However, ho played for tho Oxfordshire County side in IS3I and 1932. P. C. Minns, another Auckland Rhodes Scholar, played for the same county at the beginning of this year. Kalaugher played-cricket for Oxford in 1928-29-31 and for Oxfordshire iu 1931-32 in minor county matches of two days' duration each. Ho said this was quite a good class of game. The Anoklander naturally took a great interest in the doings of Lovelock. He saw Lovelock in March just after ho had run a mile in 4m 18s, which was l-5s outside the inter-univer-sity record. In June Lovelock underwent an operation to improve his breathing and. tho success of the operation was proved by his world record run in America a few wceka ago-
