CONTESTS IN COUNTRY

COMPETITION FOR SAGE CUP FRANKTON TEAM SUCCESSFUL Rugby football competitions were continued ill the various country centres on Saturday afternoon, when some championships were finalised and further representative matches decided. The following accounts of games were forwarded by correspondents of the Hekai.d:— Hamilton.—Playing conditions were perfect for the final games in the' Sage Cup competition. Tho cup was won by Frankton, which defeated Railway by 44 points to 3. Tries were scored for Frankton by J. Denz, Everest (2), Griffiths (2), Snodgras3 (2), Storey (2), Weatherley and Priscott. L. Denz converted four and kicked a penalty gonl. An unconverted try was scored for Railway by Martin. Mariet, 14. defeated Technical Old Boys, 8. Tries for tho winning team were scored by Devcich, W. Cassidy, P. Clarkin and 'W. Cassidy. Clr\.rkin also converted one try. Tho Technical score consisted of tries by Elrick and Haughey, Lewis converting one. Old Boy 3 defeatec. Horotiu by 30 points to 0. F6r Old Boys tries were scored by Voice (2), W. Tombs, Lissette, Holmes and Whittaker. Lissette, Gilling, Voice and Holmes each converted one try. Holmes also kicked a field goal. First junior: Railway drew with Te Kowhai, 3 all; Technical Old Boys defaulted to Ruakura. Third grade: Hamilton, 19, Cambridge, G: Frankton, 35. Marist High School, 0; Technical School won by default from Whatawhata Rovers. Fourth grade: technical Old Boys, C, Frankton, 6. A replay is necessary. Matamata.—Tho final round of tho Roigard Cup competition was played, and most interest was centred in the game between Wardville and the senior champions, Patetere. Both teams were undefeated m tins competition, although Wurdville had lost two points by drawing twice. On the day s pluv Wardville thoroughly deserved to win and defeated the champions by 6 points to 3. W. Carroll, a penalty goal, and Solomau, h try, scored for Wardville, and Sponce scored a try for Pateterc. In the other game Hinuera beat a weak Matamata team by 26 points to 0. Tries for Hinuera were scored by Settlo (2). Swap (2). Hancock and Warronder. Cermami converting four. In the third grade competition High School heat Waharoa. 6—3, in the semi-final for the Crystal Cup. Pukekohe.—The final of the South Auckland Union's junior 'joinpetition resulted in a narrow win for Franklin, which defeated Pukekohe by 12 points to 11. Tries for Franklin were scored bv Attewell, Cathcart and M. Best, and M. Best kicked a penalty goal. For Pukekohe, Louglirin kicked two penalties and also converted a try scored by Boyce. Cambridge Rugby was continued here in fine weather. Northern, holders of the Binnie Cup, lost it to Rovers (Waipa SubUnion's champion club team), by 20 joints t.i 6. The visitors were superior in both departments. For the winners Woods and Young scored trieß. Young kicl+.;d two penalty goals and converted his own try, while A. Jackson kicked a field goal. A. Tipping scr.red a try for Northern and Bryant kicked a penally goal. The Otahuhu junior A team played Cambridge B, the home team winning by 15 points to 0. The visitors were hardly a match for the home side. The feature of the gamo was. a sensational try by the local fullback, K. Reid. Running from his own twenty-five, he swerved ond side-stopped half the visiting team, to touch down between the posts. .Another feature of the game was the fine display of the visiting fullback, Linton. For the winners tries were ecored by C. Watt, M. Hewitt and K. Reid, all of which W. Holmes converted. Te Awamutu.—With the Waipa Rugby Union's senior champion team. Rovers, away at Cambridge contesting the Binnie Cup, the two local attractions were the Insurance Cup match, "Waikeria v. Pirongia, and the junior representative match, Waipa v. Cambridge, for the Boyce Cup. In tho Insurance Cup gumo Waikeria had the better of it. to win eventually by 19 points to 3. For the winners five tries were scored, two being converted, while Pirongia's score was a try. unconverted. In the Boyce Cup game Waipa was always the winner and rattled on 32 points to 0. The Waipa tries were scored by Kewish, Hutchinson (2), K. Wilson. Bell, Owens. Daniell and Sutherland, Bell converting four of them. Tauranga.—The Rugby Union's competitions were continued in ideal weather. In the senior grade, for the Jordan Cup, a keen contest between Te Puna and Rangataua was won by Rangataua by 8. points to 6. The score was even at half-time, each side having kicked a penalty goal. Halfway through the second half Grey landed a penalty goal for Te Puna, which looked like winning, but. just before tho call of time. P. Ririnui ecored for Rangataua, and C. Faulkner converted, to give Rangataua victory by a margin of two points. In the other senior game Matakana defeated Athletio by 46 points to 5. Cadets had a bye. Matakana wins the Jordan Cup, which is the main senior competition. Junior games for the Green Memorial Cup resulted:— Matakana," 8, Matapihi, 3; Te Puna, 8, Rangataua, 0; Athletics defaulted to Country. A junior match for the Macintosh Shield, between Opotiki High School Old Boys (Opotiki championship winners) and Cadets Old Boys (Tauranga championship winners), resulted in an easy win for Cadets by 32 points to 0. Paeroa. —The junior competition resulted:—Athletic, 11, Old Boys, 3; Ilikutaia, 11, Netherton, 3; West. 14, Maoris, 6. A eenior practice match was played. W. Donaldson, playing halfback for the A tenm, had his right arm fractured as he dived over the line. Thames,—The Thames representatives defeated Waihi in a one-sided game by 28 points to 3. The Thames backs and forwards dominated tho game, right through. Waihi secured one try. For Thames G. Pollock (2), Dufty, Cameron, Ake, and K. Strange scored. Savage kicked two penalty goals and converted two tries, The Thames juniors defeated Waihi by 8 points to 3, and Thames High School defeated Waihi High School also by 8 to 3. Whakatane.—ln a match for the Hurunui Apanui Shield, played at To Teko, Rangataiki proved too superior for Galatea and won by 25 points to 8. The game was fast, Rangitniki throwing the ball about well, although the Galatea forwards showed to advantage in the tight play. Whangarel.—At Rugby Park in perfect weather, and on a hard ground, Hikurangi defeated Maungokaramea in the senior knock-out Rugby competition by 6 points (tries by Dickson and Beehro) to 3 points (penalty goal by B. Morrisey). The game was fast and open and by. winning Hikurangi secures the competition. The same club won the senior championship for this season, going through without a loss. Opotiki.—The final for the Do Luxe Cup. a knock-out competition, was played at Opotiki in splendid weather, 0.M.P., 17, defeating Old Boys, 9. This is the second year in succession that O.M.P. has won the championship and the De Luxe Cup. In a junior knock-out competition for a presentation shield, O.M.R, 11, defeated Country, 0.
