POLICE WITHDRAWN

GUARD ON OIL VESSEL COMPLETION OF UNLOADING The Greek tanker Irini completed unloading bulk petrol from Russia at Western Wharf early yesterday morning, and shortly afterwards the police guard, which had been placed on the vessel on her arrival from Wellington on Thursday, was withdrawn. Pumping operations ceased at ono o'clock and immediately afterwards the two detectives and one policeman, who had been stationed on board, came on shore and the restrictions on visitors to the vessel were lifted.

During the day the Irini was replenishing her bunkers from the steamer Hikurangi and repairs were being carried out to the tanker's engines. The repair work will bo completed in time for the vessel to leave for Westport early to-morrow morning. After replenishing 6er bunkers at Westport, tho Irini will return to Greece, via Australia.

The tanker unloaded 5000 tons of bulk petrol at Lyttelton, Dunedin, Wellington and Auckland. At each port a police guard was placed on the- vessel and only the ship's agents and officials from the oil company and Harbour Board were allowed on board, a procedure not carried out before on any oil tanker visiting New Zealand,
