TRUCULENT BARGEES
RIVER SEINE BLOCKED NAVAL FORCE CALLED OUT LONDON, Aug. 22 The Paris correspondent of the Evening News reports that as a protest against newly imposed canal and river tolls the bargees blockaded Paris to-day. They tied their boats together with steel cables and formed a barrier across the Seine, stopping all traffic. They then defied the police to do their worst. The authorities stated that this a.ction had deprived hundreds of factories of coal and raw materials, but the infuriated bargees refused to listen. With their wives they formed a line, and, armed with boathooks, repulsed tho police, who appealed to the navy, which sent a tug to break the cordon. The bargees were so threatening that the captain of the tug withdrew until he was reinforced by a second tug, 50 marines and 200 police. Tho bargees riveted their boats and dropped the anchors over the sides, but the marines, using fire-hoses, tumbled them into the Seine. The police attacked the bargees in the rear at the same time and forced them to surrender. Fifty arrests wore made.
