MAU IN SAMOA

REQUEST NOT GRANTED ADMINISTRATOR'S ACTION (Received August 23, 5.5 p.m.) APIA, Aug. 22 A meeting between the Administrator of Western Samoa, Mr. H. E. Hart, and the Mau leaders has been held practically every week since early in June until August 18. At each meeting the Mau requested that Mr. 0. F. Nelson be allowed to attend, but the Administrator refused. At a meeting on August 12 Mr. Hart told the Mau that it was useless to make this request each time. Unless they were prepared to meet him without Mr. Nelson the meeting set for August 18 would be the last. The same request was made on August 18 and further meetings were discontinued by the Administrator, who said they would revert to the original position and that the law must be observed. A report has been circulated that tho Administrator threatened to make use of navnl men from the Veronica to enforce tho law. That , report is not correct. The Mau subsequently saw Mr. Hart and admitted that tho rumour to that effect which had been circulated after the last meeting was not coirect and that no such statement had b-)en made by the Administrator.
