DENSE MORNING FOG

PERIOD OF SIX HOURS DELAYS TO SHIPPING A heavy fog prevailed for about six hours yesterday morning, and the movements of shipping were considerably hampered. The fog commenced before three o'clock, and was very dense over the harbour and foreshore, and extended as far as the Manukau Harbour. The Tainui, which was to have sailed for London at G»3O, was delayed at the wharf by the fog for three hours, and sailed at 9.30. The Mataroa, which arrived from Wellington, was held up by the fog outside the Rangitoto Channel, and had to anchor for three hours. The cargo steamer Kaimiro was to have left King's Wharf for Chelsea at seven o'clock, but it was 8.30 before she could leave.

Masters of ferry steamers had considerable difficulty navigating their vessels, but no mishaps occurred and there was very little delay. On the west coast the fog was just as dense and lasted longer. The motorship Alexander arrived in the Manukau Harbour from Dargaville on Tuesday evening, but after crossing the bar she was unable to negotiate the channel owing to the fog. She anchored for the night and reached Onehunga at 11.30 a.m.
