PROVINCIAL RUGBY

{SOUTHLAND BEATEN AGAIN VICTORY FOR WELLINGTON THIRTY-EIGHT POINTS TO II [bt telegraph—press association] JVELLINGTON, Wednesday Tho touring Southland Rugby team vas defeated' by Wellington at Athletic Park to-day by 38 points to 11. The game was very evenly contested jn tho first spell, -when the visitors played with a strong wind and a bright sun ,behind them, but once Wellington had these conditions in their favour tliey opened up play and, •with backs and forwards combining in fast passing rushes, won comfortably. Southland fought doggedly, their forwards particularly, but they were not equal to tho class of tho victors. Southland's' reputation for good forward play ,was thoroughly maintained. They set Wellington a task greater than, any any home sido has had to answer this season, but tactical superiority proved a strong factor in favour. Wellington was content to play Southland moro or less at its own game in tho first spell, which ended threo all, but after turning round Wellington commenced to develop its characteristic type of open game, and from the interval had things practically its own way. Southland saw sufficient of tho ball to have held its own with Wellington, but the movements lacked design and finish, whilo tho handling was poor.

In the second spell Southland's defence fell away and, as well as being out-gene: ailed, tho sido was outmanoeuvred by the speed of tho Wellington backs. Berry scored the opening try for Southland, but Killecn soon equalised for Wellington, outpacing tho Southland defence after Lilburne had shortpi aled with a positional kick. There ivas no further scoring until the second spoil, whert Killeen again showed exceptional speed to beat the Southland backs in a race for tho ball. Fuller i-onverted. Fuller then rounded off a Wellington passing movement by scoring and converting. Tries were added in quick succession by Dellabarca and Robins, Fuller converting both. Kilby then opened up a nice movement for Dellabarca to score again, and Keid touched down from a forward rush, Fuller converting both tries. Sharp kicked a penalty goal for Southland, which Robins followed up yith a good try in tho corner after all the Wellington backs had handled. Fuller again converted. The final try went to Southland, when a penalty kick by Sharp hit tho upright and rebounded into play, and George touched down in a handy position, Sharp concerting. "•
