WAGES OF CARRIERS

CONCILIATION PROCEEDINGS ADJOURNMENT DECIDED [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON. Tuesday In view of the present economic conditions, employees and master carriers agreed to adjourn conciliation proceedings concerning the award covering drivers in the Poverty Bay, Hawke's Bay, Wanganui and Nelson districts until September 5. The New Zealand Federated Drivers and Related Trades Industrial Association of Workers sought a new award to cover these districts, providing for a 48-hour week, with rates of pay ranging from £3 17s 8d a week for one-horse drivers to £4 9s 6d for drivers of 10-ton lorries. The employers desired rates on an hourly basis, from Is 6d to Is 8d for lorries over three tons. In the course of discussion, it was said the employers were trying hard to keep down charges in order to keep going until better times returned. Men were being kept on for whom little work was offering. Mr. T. 0. Bishop, for the employers, said it was desired to wait and see if the prices of primary products increased. The districts concerned were dependent upon this. The council therefore adjourned until September 5.
