UNCOLLECTED RENTS
WRITING OFF IN SYDNEY TOTAL OF OVER £IOOO Outstanding rents amounting to over £IOOO were written off by the Sydney City Council recently, when the chairman of the Finance Committee, Sir Samuel Walder, said it had been impossible for officers to trace many of the defaulters. The largest amount was £253;-others ranged * from £5 to £lll. Alderman Grant questioned an amount of £416 17s in rates due on a property in Macquarie Street, and asked why the rates were allowed to accumulate to that extent. Alderman Walder said the amount in question referred to a period of only one year and a-half. Every effort had been made to trace the ratepayer concerned, but he could not be found. The Lord Mayor said the other amounts had accumulated over many years, and several of them should have been written off before. '
