FIFTY YEARS AGO

EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are extracts from the New Zealand - Herald of August 8, 1883: There is a movement on foot among the residents of Northcote to have a special constable appointed in the district, and not before the want of such an officer was painfully felt. Petty thefts are of frequent occurence, and frequently parcels left on the wharf are carried away before the owners come for them. Orchard robberies are .also very frequent in the neighbourhood and, of course, the constable stationed at Devonport is unable to afford much protection to the Northcote district. At a meeting of the Harbour Board yesterday a letter was received from the secretary of the Takapuna Jockey Club asking for a lease for 50 years of the foreshore adjoining the racecourse. The letter stated that the turns were so sharp at present that owners of first-class horses , could not be got to run their horses. A motion was carried " that as the engineer has several times reported that the Devonport Wharf is dangerous to traffic, and not worth repairing, the engineer be instructed to prepare an estimate, for a new wharf on the same site." The contractor for the laying of asphalt on a portion of .the Queen Street Wharf ' commenced operations yesterday morning. The start was maoo from the Ferry Company's tee, on trie west side of the main wharf. With the somewhat weak foundation, and the constant vibration of the structure from the heavy cart traffic, it is doubtful if the asphalt will last for any length of time. • In reply to a question in the Houso of Commons, Mr. Gladstone said that the views of the Government in con miction with Egypt had not changed. Infl outbreak or cholera had delayed the steps proposed for the reorganisation ot the country, and prevented the possibility of an early withdrawal of the British troops of occupation.
