Treaty of Versailles. The Times emphasises the disquieting similarities between the situation today and in August, 1914. It says the public is still uneasily doubtful whether victory over Germany was achieved. "Germanv again is the prime cause of European unsettlement," continues the Times. "Apparently she is deliberately attempting remilitarisation and preparing forcefully to unite herself with her nationals over her borders. She possesses the same fundamental disregard for treaties and complete inability to grasp tho value of the homely British principle of 'live and let live.' "German policy has changed little since before the war when it alternated between paroxysms of bullying and fervid protestations of friendship. The question still is whether the ideals of personal and national liberty cherished by Britain and other nations, or German ruthlessness and State domination, shall prevail. Some have learned the lesson, but the issue still is & live one." DEFINITE CHARGE FRENCH INFORMATION OBTAINING WAR AIRCRAFT (Received August 4, 5.35 p.m.) LONDON. Aug. 4 The Paris correspondent of the News Chronjclo states that the French Government has received fresh information which, it claims, proves Germany's intention to obtain war aeroplanes, also to rearm. WILD RIOTING GENERAL STRIKE SCENES VIOLENCE IN STRASSBURG (Received August 5, 12.55 a.m.) LONDON. Aug. 4 A message from Strassfiurg states that a general strike there led to wild rioting. The strikers extinguished the lights, erected barricades in tho streets and held up motor vehicles and pedestrians*. They attacked the police with knives and other weapons, wounding 20. The . police retaliated with rifle-fire, wounding 50. They arrested many of the strikers, including Germans armed with knives and knuckle-dusters. Aug. 8 The Trades Union Congress ended aggressively with the passing unanimously of a' resolution in favour of an immediate boycott of German goods. . GERMAN REPLY TO FRANCE FURTHER PROTEST EVOKED LONDON, August 3 The Paris correspondent of the Manchester Guardian says the German reply to France's protest against the kidnapping of three men from the Saar region stated that the German Government' had ordered an immediate inquiry and would communicate Inter with the French Government. The unsatisfactory nature of the reply prompted a further French protest.- The authorities are of the opinion that there has been ample time already for inquiries and that it is time something was discovered.
