THE CITY MARKETS

LOWER PRICES FOR ORANGES LEMONS SLOW OF SALE Slightly lower prices were obtained for Delicious'apples at the City Markets yesterday, but other varieties were in good demand. There was a fall in prices for oranges, the demand being affected by arrivals due on Monday. Lemons were very slow of sale and values were reduced considerably. High prices ruled for hothouse grapes, of which only a few were available. Hothouse tomatoes also sold at advanced rates, the season being now practically finished. The vegetable market was glutted with cabbages and cauliflowers and values in sacks and on benches showed a fall of about 50 per cent. There were also heavy supplies of onions and white potatoes. Lettuce were in good supply, but included much of poor quality. A keen demand was shown for rhubarb and Brussels sprouts, which were in short supply. There was little demand for spinach and hothouse cucumbers. Root vegetables generally sold well. In poultry there was a poor demand for laying birds, but table birds were in good request. TARANAKI IRONSAND STEEL COMPANY'S INQUIRY [BY TELEGRAPH-*—OWN CORRESPONDENT] NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday Interest in the possibilities of Taranaki ironsand for the manufacture of steel has been reawakened by a communication received by the Patea Harbour Board from the Anglo-American Steel Company, of London. The company asked if there was a possibility of obtaining large quantities of electrical power near the board's ironsand deposits at Patea, as the company was thinking seriously of starting the installation of its electrical steel plant in New Zealand for the manufacture of stainless steel. The company also asked'for samples of ironsand which it proposed transporting to its own wharf in London. It was stated that if the company manufactured in Patea it would require from 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 units of electricity a year to work two electrical furnaces for refining purposes. The power must be at a cost of less a farthing a unit. The chairman and secretary of the board arc to givo the required information.
