OBITUARY

MRS. B. BUTTLE The death occurred this week of Mrs. Bessie Buttle, a well-known resident of Auckland. She was born in Dunedin, and after her marriage to the late Mr. Benjamin W. Buttle they resided in various parts of the Dominion, Mr. Buttle's position of manager in the Kaiapoi Woollen Company taking him to different eentres. They came to Auckland in 1905, and resided here continuously from that date. Mr. Buttle died in 1929. During the Great War Mrs. Buttle was an untiring worker in patriotic causes. Her capacity for organisation and administration and her business ability contributed in a large measure to the success of the work of the Auckland Women's Patriotic League. As convener of the Dominion gift committee of the league she was responsible for the despatch each month of Auckland's quota of the gift parcels sent to the men at the front. Mrs. Buttle was a devoted supporter of the women's movement. She was a charter member of the Auckland Lyceum Club and a member of the committee from its foundation. She was elected a vicepresident of the club in 1922 and held that position until 1932, when, on her retirement from oißce, she was appointed a life member. Mrs. Buttle is survived by her step-daughter, Mrs. C. M. Wright, of Te Kuiti, and her sister, Mrs. E. W. Giesen, of Wellington. * MR. JAMES SHAW [from our own correspondent] TE AWAMUTU, Friday The death occurred at Paterangi yesterday of Mr. James Shaw, a settler of the district for the past 22 years. Mr. Shaw was born at Clevedon 59 years ago, and as a youth removed with his parents and family to Tauwhare, where they brought in a l.irgo area of land , to a high state of productivity. Mr. Shaw, after removing to Paterangi, took an active interest in the progress of the district, and was for several years a member of the school committee and an active worker for the Presbyterian Church. As a breeder of pedigree Jersey stock he was known throughout the province. He leaves a widow, two daughters and two sons. MR. RICHMOND DUNN [by telegraph—press association] WELLINGTON. Friday The death has occurred of Mr. Richmond Dunn,- editor of the New Zealand Dental Journal. His wife died three weeks ago. There is no family.
