CHANNEL SWIMMER
FAILURE TO CROSS MISS GLEITZE'S ATTEMPT . British Wireless RUGBY, Aug. 2 Miss Mercedes Gleitze, who in 1927 swam the Channel from the French coast to Dover, this morning began an attempt to swim from Dover to tho French coast. She hoped to reach France in 20 hours. After six hours in the water Miss Gleitze was swimming strongly, about eight miles east of Dover, but she abandoned the swim after eight hours owing to a rising wind and rough seas. She had covered 10 miles.
