ELLERSLIE TRAINING

SOLID EFFORTS RECORDED KILTOWYN'S SIX FURLONGS ALPINUS AND KING MARCH BY ARCHER Some solid work was accomplished at Ellerslie yesterday, when Kiltowyn took the honours by registering the best time over six furlongs, a distance that AJpinus and King"""March also covered soundly. The tracks were slow after the recent wet weather and all the galloping was recorded on the No. 3 grass, where the poles were out lift. Deputy Ruler (Parsons), after getting the worst of the jump-off, was going nicely alongside United (.Simpson), with Dark Marble (Jenkins) just behind, at the end of five furlongs in 1.6 4-5. The first two furlongs were run in 2f. 4-ss. and Deputy Ruler did his work attractively, his companions also performing satisfactorily. Alpinus (Baker) led King March (McTavisli) in the early stages of a six-furlongs gallop, but they were together ai the end in 1.20. The first three furlongs were run in 38 3-5s and Alpinus was going the easier at the finish, where King March was being kicked up to keeo with him. Alpinus is settling down a lot and King March looks a picture of fitness. King Musk (Jenkins) covered half a mile easily in 5Gs, and Wee Pat strode over six furlongs in 1,27 1-5 King Musk is showing improved condition,' but has not been asked any serious questions since being taken in hand by E. S. Groat. Kiltowyn (E. Manson) began steadily at the commencement of a round and did not reach a gallop until near the six-furlongs post, from where he . ran home in 1.19 2-5. Kiltowyn ran the three furlongs along the back in 38 2-ss. but was showing a tendency to loaf nl the end of his work. He looks very well. Chief Cook (Jenkins) and the Lackham— Morzonia filly (Wiggins) ran four furlong 3 from almost a stand in 53 2-ss. The Lackham filly began very smartly and was steadied a little after going about half a furlong, shortly after which she was joined by Chief Cook. They came up the straight together and were both on the bit at the finish. General Lu (Olive) encompassed a round in 2.5 and The Highland Chief was timed to cover six furlongs in 1.26 2-5. General Lu will not lack condition for his engagements at the Pakuranga meeting, but he is only a moderate. Zane Grey (H. Dulieu) and Grant's Opal (Fergus) were echoolod over the steeplechase fences on the flat twice, talnng the water-jump the first time instead of the dou-jle. They were careful at first, but made no mistakes, both jumping in improved fashion the second time. Many horses were allotted serviceable tasks on the sand and among the number noticed working usefully were Catoma, Patutahi, Korokio, Caliente, Landlubber and Gay Marigold.
