REPORT ON FINANCES ERADICATION OF RAGWORT [by telegraph —OWN correspondent] PAPAROA, Thursday A report on the cpunty finances presented at a meeting of the Otamatea County Council yesterday showed that at the last meeting there was a credit balance of £172 ss, and tho receipts since then had amounted to £4112 15s, making a total of £4285. Accounts paid since the last meeting totalled £lsOl, leaving a credit balance of £2780. It was reported that a conference concerning the amalgamation of local bodies was fixed for August 17 at Whangarei. The chairman and Mr. Scott Davidson were appointed dolegates. _ , In connection with the menace ot ragwort, which is threatening farm lands, a circular letter has been sent to every ratepayer in the county and to pach of the eight Northern local bodies, also to the Government departments concerned and to the Farmers' Union, stiessing the seriousness of the position and offering assistance in the eradication of the weed. Tho weekly allocation to tho county under the No. 5 scheme has been increased by £lO a week to £55 lis The engineer's report stated that tho following works had been completed: Tinopai Beach Road (stone wall to prevent erosion); Lindquist's Road (metalling) ; Bentley-Shirley Road (including fencing). The relief camp men were still engaged at Wairere and there was a moderate number of other relief workers throughout the county. A valuable new quarny on Birtle s Estate, near the Ford Road, Huarau, which would be available for various highways and other roads, had been opened. The metal was of excellent quality. Plans for the Boundary Bridge had been submitted to the Whangarei County Council for approval.
