IMPORTS FROM BRITAIN
Sir, —I was sorry to read that during June our imports into the port of Auckland from Australia reached in tonnage almost tho same level as those from Britain. Surely at present more than ever we should be trading with Britain. A glance at Britain's trade returns for the first four months of 1933 reveals that Denmark, Belgium, Argentina, Finland, Brazil, France, Portugal, Italy and Egypt of the major foreign countries all increased their imports, while India, South Africa, Palestine,. Australia, (slightly) and some of the colonies increased their imports. New Zealand stands out as one whose imports from England have declined. Moreover, many European countries are showing increased activity in their desire to stimulate imports from England by holding shopping weeks and exhibitions and releasing restrictions to trade. Britain has received no benefit from us arising out of the Ottawa Conference, and we should follow the advice and lead of Mr. Goodfellow. The Motherland won't place the quota on us, but we should do our share in fulfilling the obligations of Ottawa. Business.
