OBITUARY

MR. AETHtJR CLEAVE PIONEER OF MOTORING The death occurred yesterday, after a short illness, of Mr. Arthur Cleave, of 1 Wairakei Street, Green Lane, a prominent Auckland business man and one of the pioneers of motoring in the Dominion. Mr. Cleave was born in London 71 years ago and came to New Zealand with his parents at the age of two. Ho first attended the Rev. M. Taylor's school and completed his education at the Auckland Grammar School tinder Mr. Farquhar McCrea. On leaving school he joined the Railway Department, being the first cadet to be appointed in the Auckland section. Later he became confidential clerk to the late Mr. A. V. Macdonald and had risen to be stationmaster at Remuera at the time of his retirement from the service in 1889 -in order to establish a business of his own as printer and publisher. He later purchased the New Zealand Sporting and Dramatic Review and was interested in other pubcations. Tho late Mr. Cleave always took a keen interest in motoring from its very earliest days. Hei v was the second honorary secretary of the Auckland Automobile Association, following _ Dr. George de Clivo Lowe in this position, and ho carried out these duties from 1904 to 1911, when Mr. G. W. Hutchison was appointed secretary. Mr. Cleave was president of the association in 1916 and 1917, and was elected a life member in 1926. Tho late Mr. Cleave was among the first -to demonstrate the dependability of cars bv a series of lengthy tours. Un December 21, 1904, he established a record, which was unbeaten for a considerable time, for the trip from Auckland to Rotorua, covering the distance m 7 hours 37 minutes. Shortly before this, driving a steam locomobile car, he had made the first car trip between Auckland and Wellington.. # Apart from his publishing interests as managing director of Arthur Cleave and Company, Limited, the late Sir. Cleave was a director of the \Yhite Star Transport Company, Limited, and Wairakei, Limited. He was also a member of the Auckland Racing Club and the Auckland Trotting Club and was at one time a member of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association. He is survived bv his wife and five children, Mr. A. L. Cleave, Mr. P. E. Cleave, Mr. E. H. Cleave, Miss Bertha Cleave and Sirs. J. E. S. Lepine, all of Auckland. There are six grandchildren. MR. JAMES SHAW The death has occurred at Paterangi, Waikato, of3lr. James Shaw, who had been farming in the district for tjie past 22 years. Although Mr. Shaw took little part in public affairs he was well known and widely esteqjned. Mr. Shaw is survived by 'his wife, two daughters and two sons.
