WOMAN AS SECRETARY
RACING CLUB OFFICIAL CALLERS* COMMON ERROR "K. O'Mara, Esq.," is a form of address .which has no novelty for Miss Kathleen O'Mftra, acting-secretary of the Clarence River Jockey Club, Grafton, New South Wales. Her mail generally .contains one., or two letters addressed in that manner, and nearly every day someone walks into her office and asks to seo "Mr. O'Mara." On being informed that she is Miss O'Mara they say that it is her brother they want to see, finally making it clear that they will not deal with anyone except tho secretary, at which point tho truth generally dawns upon them. "Mr. O'Mara, thero she is," is a common enough direction to strangers at Grafton. Miss O'Mara arranges all the details of the meetings held at Grafton, but she gives most of the credit for organisation to tho committee. She was secretary to tho late Mr. F. W. Whiteman, who was an accountant before ho was appointed secretary to the Jockey Club, and. Miss O'Mara went with him to act as his secretary. Shortly after his death, about a year ago, sho was appointed acting-secretary, which position she has held ever sinco.
