HOSPITAL LEVY RAISED
COUNTY COUNCIL'S PROTEST CLOSING OF INSTITUTION [by tei, egraph—OWN correspondent] PAPAROA, Thursday A warm discussion arose at a meeting of the Otamatea County Council yesterday when the clerk read correspondence from the Kaipara Hospital Board stating that the levy on the county had been increased from £1586 to £1774. In view of the board's recent decision to close tho county hospital at Paparoa, it was resolved to send a strong protest to the board and also to the Minister of Health. The action of the board in increasing tho rate levy while at the same time taking away tho county hospital facilities was resented by the council and several members spoke in strong support of the resolution. A reply was read from the actingPrime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, in response to the council's appeal for the retention of the hospital. Tiio Minister promised consideration of the request and said he would advise whether it would be possible for him to visit the institution at an early date as requested.
