RUGBY FOOTBALL

PROPOSED JUBILEE TROPHY MODERN DESIGN SUGGESTED RULES FOR COMPETITION ''l strongly favour getting something original of this nature," suid Mr. H. Frost, chairman of the management .pbmmittee of the Auckland Rugby Union, when a somewhat mo'dern design for the jubilee trophy, symbolic of the spirit of the. game, was under consideration at last evening's meeting. The design, submitted by Mr. A. Billington, was brought forward us a. possible alternative to the proposed Jubilee Gold Cup. Mr. Frost stressed the need of getting away from the old-fashioned idea of a cup and considered that a trophy, as visualised by the design submitted, symbolising .is it did the spirit and • traditions of the game, would be a splendid departure. As a decision had previously been made to make the jubilee trophy a gold cup, it was decided, after discussion, to table a notice of motion with a view to rescinding this decision so that acceptance of the new design could be given consideration. In submitting the new design, Mr. Billington also moved that as an official jubilee trophy a miniature gold cup bo donated to the winning team each year, the proposed new trophy, if accepted, not to be won outright, but to remain the property of the union for all time. Quoting specific instances, the New Zea< land Union deprecated in a circular letter to unions the use of obscene language to referees and the tendency of spectators to interfere with the control of the game. The committee decided to supply a copy of the letter to the Auckland Referees' Association. The Training College Club was. granted permission to play at Pacrpa on August 2G. The reinstatements of J. E. Garrod and K. F. Hall were by the New Zealand Union. Rules to govern the jubilee knock-out competition, commencing* on Saturday,, were advised as follows:—"In the event o£ both teams, at tho conclusion of any match, having scored an equal number of points, two extra periods of 10 minutes each shall bo played, .the teams changing over each spell. Iru.the event of the scores at the conclusion of the extra spells being even, the match will be replayed at a date and tirno to be fiied by tho management committee. In the event of any team failing to take the field at tho time and place appointed, it shull be deemed to have lost the match. The management committee shall, when making' the fixtures for the several rounds of the competition, at the same time fix tho time and date when replay matches, if any, shall be played. In the event of a replay being necessary this shall lake place at Eden Park on. the Wednesday following the Saturday at 4 p.m., two spells of 20 minutes to be- played. MARLBOROUGH/DEFEATED WIN FOR CANTERBURY B -[BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday The Marlborough representative team was beaten to-day by the Canterbury B team by 10 points to 5. Canterbury had a lead of three points at the interval, but in the second half the Canterbury backs took charge and. opening up the game effectively, scored 13 extra points. The Marlborough forwards held the-, local pack, but .the visiting bacjcs lacked ability to penetrate.'.'>■ ; » • <i EASY WIN FOR CANTERBURY' ASHBURTON'S CHALLENGE [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday Defending the Ranfurly Shield for the first time this 'season, Canterbury had a runaway victory over Ashburton this afternoon, winning by 31 points to 7. Canterbury's line was not crossed, Ashburton's qcoro coining from a field goal and a penalty goal, Ashburton secured a field goal •within six minutes of the kink-off and continued. to ketfp the score within reasonable limits until half-time, but only by keeping play ,as tight as possible. This kept 'the ball from the Canterbury backs, who early showed marked superiority over Ashburton. At half-time the score, was 13—7 in favour of Canterbury. In tho second spoil Ashburton did not, or could not, continue its early policy. The Canterbury backs and forwards struck better form, the Ashburton defence crumbled, and Canterbury ran up a big ecore. The home forwards played a Mgry impressive game, np to best Ranfurly Shield standard. The - backs also were good on attack and defence, with the pne weakrsss that passes were often slowly and uncertainly given by Stevons at 'the back of the scrum. Tho Ashburton forwards pla-yed a sturdy, determined game, especially in the first half, but they never looked like scoring. The backs showed some ability in defence, but never developed.""an attacking mqvement. which looked really dangerous. • . 'i '': : " " : t. ' .' INTER-COLLEGE GAME ST.
