BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH
POSTAL FACILITIES The Birkenhead Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor, Mr. G. Mills, presiding. The Mayor said a satisfactory amount of current rates had been received, although arrears were not coming in so freely. The overdraft had been reduced considerably. A committee was appointed to investigate the possibility of having a telephone installed at the Birkenhead AVharf foi the use of the public. Permission was given to the Girl Guides' Association to take up a collection of goods on August. 30. A request is to be made for the extension of mail delivery to Pupuke and Kauri Glen Roads, and as far as the reservoir, and also for the collection twice daily from a public letter box at the bottom of Seddon Road for the convenience of Chelsea residents. Renewed application for the erection of a post office at Highbury Corner is to be made. The Municipal Association is to be asked to make representations to the proper quarter that in selecting justices of the peace local authorities should be consulted. Mr. A. Hadfield said Birkenhead was short of justices, and only ono appeared in the recent list. The Mayor said no progress had been made regarding amalgamation of boroughs. The next step would be for the Mayor of Takapuna to call the conference, but that council had stipulated that this would be conditional upon representatives of all the four borough councils attending. , VACANCY ON COUNCIL THREE CANDIDATES OFFER Nominations close at noon to-day for the vacant seat on the Birkenhead Borough Council. Two former members, Messrs. E. J. Sinel and J. Prickott, and Mr. A. C. Stack are candidates. Tho election will take place on August 14.
