COUNTY COUNCIL FINED
WEIGHT OF MOTOR-TRUCKS LOAD LIMIT§ EXCEEDED [ FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] PUKEKOHE. Wednesday Two charges of operating motortrucks of a greater gross weight than thn/t allowed by the road classification were brought by the Pukekohe Borough(Conneil traffic inspector, Matthew Hickey, against the Franklin County Council in the Pukekohe Police. Court to-day. For the County Council, Mr. Grierson pleaded guilty to both charges. For the Borough Council, Mr. Rice stated that the prosecution was evidence of a sincere desire to enforce the regulations faithfully. The County Council had been previously warned, but had . apparently ignored the warnings. The traffic inspector stated that the laden 'weight of the truck concerned in the first charge was 30cwt. above thd limit of eight tons permitted on the road. The weight of the truck involved in the second charge was 23cwt. in excess. Mr. Grierson said the County Council was surprised and hurt over the prosecution. Metal was being carted by the trucks to construct roads which Jed to the borough. The unladen weight of ,thc trucks was about 44 tons. Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M.: The position is that the Pukekohe Borough Council are trustees, and it is their duty to see that the people whom they represent are not mulct in extra costs to recondition roads. They should subject any party who wishes to carry loads in excess of the classification to a bond to reconstruct the roads to their satisfaction. Provided the borough are not burdened by extra wear and tear by these vehicles, there i» no reason why permission should not be. granted* for 'the County Council to use the vehicles over borough roads. The County Council was fined £2 and ordered to pay costs, £1 0s fid, on each charge.
