GRAIN CONFERENCE
DELEGATES AT REGINA AWARDS AT EXHIBITION (Received July 20, 5.5 p.m.) OTTAWA, July 25 A World Grain Conference, attended by representatives of 20 countries, was officially opened to-day in Regina. Greetings to the delegates and best wishes for the work ahead were extended by Mr. Arthur Meighen, Government leader in the Senate, Mr. W. L. Mackenzie King, leader of the Liberal tarty, and Mr. Robert Weir, Minister of Agriculture, who presided. There was an attendance of 1500 at the opening ceremonies, which were followed by the reading of technical papers and a discussion of agricultural problems. Ac the exhibition held in connection with the conference Mr. Frcland Wilford. of Staveley, Alberta, with his "Reward" strain of wheat in the hard, red spring class, won the "wheat crown." Mr. Herman Trello, of Wembley, Alberta, winner for the past three years, was second. Mr. Charles Brook, of Woodchester, South Australia, was placed fourth in the large field pea class. The first, second r<nd third awards went to British Columbians. Mr. JJrook also won sixth place in the general pea class. STATE SPECULATION BIG LOSS AVERTED WINNIPEG, July 25 Mr. John MeFarlaud, Government wheat representative, is reported to have sold 50,000,000 bushels during tho recent advances, on behalf of the Government, to supply the futures market. Ho then bought '25,000,000 bushels in a futile effort to stem the frantic decline in prices. The Government at one lime was holding 150.000.000 bushels. Tho recent rise saved it from a loss that might' have reached '50.000,000 dollars. Aided by constructive) buying, wheat futures gained 5 cents and 1} cents today.
