TRANSFER OF £15,000 CHRISTCHURCH CITY RATES [nv TELEC.KAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday In fixing a general rate of 2Jd in the pound on the unimproVed value, tho same rate as was struck last year, the City Council rejected by nine votes to six a proposal that the amount of the vote be referred back to the Financq Committee, with an instruction that the payment of the subsidy to the unemployed and the payment of award rates to permanent employees be discontinued, and the amount thus saved he applied to a reduction of tho rates. The discussion lasted four hours. The council finally approved tho transfer of £15,000 from the Electricity Department's funds in order to avoid a rise in rates or a reduction in the estimates. In exchange for the £15.000, the department will receive property adjacent to tho power station, which is now occupied by the destructor.
