EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD The following are. extracts from the New Zealand Herald of July. 27, 1883: ~ ' ' A message from London states that the spread of cholera is proceeding in Cairo without check, and the mortality is said to be thousands daily. The Times declares that the British occupation of Egypt, under the circumstances, cannot yet terminate Confirmed telegrams have been received in Capetowfi reporting "'at Cetewayo was killed in tlio battle recently fought at Ulundi. A foolhardy feat has cost Captain Webb his life. He undertook, for a wager, to swim through the whirlpools at Niagara, and in attempting to perform this dangerous task lie was sucked under and drowned. His successful swim across the English Channel some years ago is the most wonderful teat of its kind on record. A correspondent complains with regard to the Ponsonby Ward that the residents have to go out to the street to get their letters from the mounted postman; also that the branch P osC office is not made suitable for the reception of newspapers.
