REQUEST FOR LENIENCY

VAGRANT'S PLEA SUCCEEDS , SENTENCE MITIGATED /A plea for leniency made by Daniel O'Connor, single, in tho Onehunga Police Court yesterday, when charged with vagrancy, had tho effect of securing him mitigation of a sentence of 14 days' imprisonment. Constable W. A. Rathie said that accused had entered several shops in Queen Street asking for money, which in some crises was given to him by the shopkeepers. His story to them was that he had walked from Wellington and wanted food and shelter. Witness, recognising accused as an old offender, arrested hiin for vagrancy. The justices, Messrs. J. E. iCowell and H. J. Davies, sentenced accused to 14 days' imprisonment, whereupon O'Connor, who pleaded guilty, promised to take out a prohibition order and said ho could get work at Mangere as a ■ snare-milker. He asked for another chance. Tho justices accordingly cancelled their previous decision and ordered accused to ODino up for sentence in six months if called upon on his under- ' taking to take out a prohibition order.
