RECLAMATION ROADS CONTINUATION OF POLICY PLAN JO BORROW £IO,OOO An application to the Local Government Loans Board for sanction to raise a loan of £IO,OOO to continue road consti uction at the western reclamation is to be made by tho Auckland Harbour Board, following a decision reached at yesterday's meeting. The chairman, Mr. T. B. Clay, presided. The engineer, Mr. H. Holderness, reported that road construction at the western reclamation was approaching completion, and if the board intended to continue its policy of providing relief employment for waterside workers, it would be necessary to seek fresh loan authority. Tho work of forming a 42ft. road on the eastern side of tho reclamation was recommended., Mr. A. M. Laing said ho was opposed to the policy of borrowing. It was not essential in this case. The board decided to apply for authority to raise £IO,OOO, and, should it bo granted, the work was to be authorised. Two notices of motion with respect to the Harbour Board staff, which had been given by Mr. W. B. Darlow at a previous meeting, were "deferred until the end of tho financial year in September for further consideration. The notices were:—That the system of rationing members of the staff bo discontinued; that the resolution enforcing a third cut in salaries of 5 per cent on £250 a year up to £450 a year, and 7J per cent over £450 a year be rescinded. Mr. Darlow said it was now proposed to consider the notices of motion after the balance-sheet had been presented. A further scheme for the provision of new skidways in front of boatsheds in King's Drive was submitted by the engineer. The scheme involves the construction of seven sets of heavy skidwavs and the widening of the platform in front of all the sheds, at a cost of £1220, as against £1355 for a previous plan. Tho engineer's report was adopted. A report regarding the disposal of wash-water from the filters at Huia and Nihotupu was received. It was stated an inspection of the beach and tidal flats at Laingholm at low water had been made and no trace of pollution could be found, the beach and foreshore generally being quite clean. The necessary resolutions in connection with the raising of the redemption loan of £IBI,OOO were passed. The loan is repayable over a period not exceeding 20 years by equal aggregate halfyearly instalments and is subject to the condition that the board shall not enter into any contract for payment outside New Zealand of any instalment due on the loan.
