WHANGAREI INTERESTS
NEW ROAD TO TOWNSHIP INVESTIGATION OF PLAN [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Tuesday The .Whangarei Borough Council decided Jast evening to instruct the Works Committee to consider the construction of a road into the Whangarei township by what is known as the western route, with a view to having the formation work carried out by unemployed labour. This would provide a second road into the township from the northern end. The chairman of the Works Committee, Mr. 10. G. W. Tibbits, said that the remaining land to bo acquired to give a through road as suggested, could be obtained under favourable conditions. The construction of this road would relieve traffic on the main road from Kamo to Whangarei township, and eliminate the necessity for driving cattlo through a portion of the main thoroughfare from the northern end of the borough. The council decided to obtain estimates for three alternative routes for a road to the borough boundary to connect with the Whangarei Harbour Board's proposed road to Kioreroa Wharf. The Railway Department is being approached to ascertain whether it is practicable for the council to obtain road connection through the station access road and along the railway to the borough boundary. A request from the Whangarei Unomploved Workers' Association for a rebate* on the charge for use of the Town Hall was declined. The association recently hired the Town Hal and held a meeting to protest publicly against certain of the activities of the Unemployment Board and matters affecting* the unemployment qnestion_ A motion in favour of a reduction of the charge was defeated. The council decided to reduce the charge made for community lighting from £3 10s to £2 10s a J.ght a year. This decision was made with a view to inducing more business men to join in the community lighting.
