NEW LYNN AFFAIRS

RATES FOR YEAR STRUCK The New Lynn Borough Council struck the rates for the current year at its meeting last evening, the total being Is 6d in the pound on the unimproved value. The Mayor, Mr. George Lawson, said the council was very reluctant to make an increase. The fall in the borough valuations from £268.000 to £IBO,OOO since 19.30 was the main cause. The council regretted its application for the complete revaluation had been refused, as it desired all ratepayers to have the opportunity of obtaining equitable rating without pay-

irip: ;i special valuation foe. The loan indebtedness of the borough was a heavy one, and on the current year's estimated valuation the payment of interest and sinking funds on loans absorbed IOJd in the pound, while the hospital and charitable aid, War Memorial Museum and street-lighting levies absorbed a further 1 13-16 d in the pound. To satisfy these payments £9OOO of the estimated revenue of £13.300 for the current year would bp required, leaving a balance of £4300, with which the council would have to maintain the sewerage, drainage and waterworks systems, street and footpath work, public works expenditure and pay bank interest and borough administration costs. There had been a great deal of economy on the part of the council, and only necessary expenditure would be undertaken during the en«uing year. x During the past year considerable work had been done in improving the roads and footpaths in the borough, especially in formation and drainage. The council .had prepared a programme for the current year, and it would be carried out accordinp to the revenue received The resignation of the borough inspector, Mr. I'. A. Wall work, was received. The Mayor said the inspector, who previously had been associated with the Health Department, had been offered a position at Westport. In moving that the resignation be accepted with regret, Mr. Lawson expressed complete satisfaction with the way Mr. j Wallwork had discharged his numerous duties.'
