ATTEMPT UPON SAFE SEVERAL SCHOOLS VISITED CASES IN PALMERSTON NORTH [by telegraph—own correspondent] PALMERSTON NORTH. Friday Evidence of the activities of burglars were discovered by the head of a large business concern when the premises were opened this morning. He loft tho shop at eight o'clock last evening and this morning he found that an attempt bad been made to blow open a steel safe. The attempt had not been successful, but such damage had been done to the lock that a welding plant had to be commissioned to open the safe. Entrance to the promises had been gained at the back of the building, where tho door was forced. The intruders traversed several departments before arriving at their destination. They had torn down some curtains and used them to deaden the noise of the explosion. An office drawer closo to the safe was searched and a quantity,of small change and somo chocolates were removed. It is believed that tho stock has not been touched. Local schools have of late been receiving attention from unauthorised persons. Last night tho Collego Street j School was added to tho list, but the ! thieves met with a very meagre return ! for tho effort entailed; After breaking i into the school, the burglars ■ searched | ihc rooms and obtained only 5s in small j silver and copper, representing the I cocoa money of some of the pupils. The ! Terrace End School was also broken into this week.
