BUILDING PROGRAMME THIRTY-TWO NEW SHIPS WASHINGTON, June 15 A 238,000,000-dollar naval building programme, intended to place 32 newships in the water in three years, was formally announced to-day by the Secretary of the Navy, Mr. Claude A. Swanson. The Minister stated that President ..Roosevelt had agreed to allocate the fluids out of the 3,300,000,000 dollars Public Works appropriation and was anxious to have the work done as soon as possible. "We will build to the fullest capacity of our shipyard facilities and as quickly as possible," said Mr. Swanson. "Wo want to put people to work at shipbuilding where 85 per cent of the expenditure goes to labour. "The programme calls for 20 destroyers, of which 16 will be in the 1500-ton class and the other four in the 850-ton class, two aircraft-carriers not exceeding 20,000 tons, four 10,000-ton cruisers with Gin. guns, four submarines, and two gunboats for Chinese waters."
