JAPAN AND DOMINIONS
THREAT OF TARIFF WAR INDIAN IMPORT DUTIES CAUSE OF PERTURBATION By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON, June 13 The Japanese Economic Federation has telegraphed to the federation of British Industries, tlio Associated British Chambers of Commerce, and the Manchester' Chamber of Commerce, to the effect that it is anxious to conclude adequate trade agreements with Britain with a view to adjusting the present intense competition. llegret is expressed that the attitude of the British cotton industry has become antagonistic to tho traditional friendship between Britain and Japan. The message stated that Japanese cotton interests are so perturbed at the revision of the Indian import tariff that they are preparing to boycott Indian raw cotton. Japan may impose a prohibitive tariff on wool, wheat and other products imported from Britain and the Dominions. The recipients of the telegram replied that such a tariff would have disastrous results, and said they earnestly hoped that an exchange of views would result in harmony. Tho present situation was grave and intolerable to British industrial and commercial interests, who were in no way associated with tho independent actiou of India.
