GATHERING IN STREET
DISPERSAL BY POLICE MEETING NOT PERMITTED An attempt to hold a street meeting at the corner of Karangahape Road and Howe Street at 7.30 last evening was frustrated by the arrival of a. large party of police, comprising detectives and constables. Advice had been Teceived by the police that a meeting was planned, in spite of the fact that a similar gathering in Quay Street last Sunday afternoon had not been allowed to proceed. There was only a small attendance last evening, some 30 men and a few women assembling on the corner of Howe Street. The leaders of the party were advised by the police that they could r.ot hold a meeting in the street, and one of the men then spoke briefly, announcing that, In view of the attitude of the police, the meeting would not take place. He advised the people to disperse, and in a short time the corner was practically deserted. The only action taken by the police was for one or two constables to walk through the spectators, advising them to leave.
