La no was elected to the council of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday to fill tlm vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr. Malcolm Stewart. The Hon. C. G. Howell, who has just relinquished the post of Attorney. General of Fiji, passed through Auckland by the Mariposa yesterday on hi* way to Kuala-Lumpur, where ho will take up the position of legal adviser to the Government of tho Federated. Malay States. Dr. R, W. Souter, a graduate "of Otago University, and now lecturer in economics at the University of Columbia, New York, arrived at Auckland by the Mariposa yesterday. He is .ic--companied by Mrs. Souter and their daughter, and they intend to spend a holiday in New Zealand. The Hon. J. -Craig. Colonial Treasurer in Fiji, arrived at Auckland from Suva by the Mariposa yesterday and is at the Grand Hotel. He is on furlough and "will leave to-morrow on a short tour of the North Island. H« will sail for England by the Taraaroa from Wellington on July 24 ' Mr. S. Austin Carr, president of the Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and Mr. W. F. O'Donnell, managing secretary, returned by the , express yesterday morning from Palmerston North, where they attended a conference of North Island agricultural and pastoral .^-sociations. The Rev. J. A. Kaye, chairman of the southern committee of the London Missionary Society, arrived at Auckland by the Mariposa yesterday after a visit to Samoa. He will make a short tour of New Zealand and will speak at several services and meetings in Auckland during the week-end. Mr. Edward Newman has been elected air honorary member of the British Mercantile Marine Association in recognition of the services rendered to British seamen and their dependants by the New Zealand Sheepowners' Acknowledgement of Debt to British Seamen's Fund, of which he is founder and chairman. Mr. J. S. Watt, New Zealand Rhodes Scholar for 1931, has been awarded the degree of doctor of philosophy in chemistry at Oxford University. Mr. Watt is a son of Mr. W. Watt, of R emu era. He gained his B.Sc. degree at the Auckland University College in 1930. Since going to England he has been verv successful in the athletic field.
