THE KOOKABURRA
Sir —When I was shipping clerk in Gisborne in 1897, 1 remember bringing ashore from one of the trips of the illfated Tasmania (wrecked at the Mania on July 29, 1897) eight kookaburras for a Mr. Henry Lorsil, sheep farmer, who obtained them from Sydney, through the agency of the ship's carpenter. Mr. Lorsil's station was situated on the East Coast, about 14 miles south of Tolaga Bay. In course of conversation with Mr. 'Lorsil, he informed me he imported tbeni to liberate on his station, which 1 know he did. The abo\G will no doubt explain their presence near Tolaga Bay. J. 51. Gumming. Mangere.
