NORTH SHORE WATER
AN ADDITIONAL SUPPLY SCHEMES CONSIDERED UPPER WAIRAU PROPOSAL In placing a plan of the Upper Wairau scheme, as an auxiliary water supply for the North Shore, before the Birkenhead Borough Council last evening, tho Mayor, Mr. G. Mills, stated this proposal was receiving every consideration by the North Shore Water Board. That day tho members of the Water Board had discussed with representatives of the City Council the question of a supply from that source. The Mayor of Auckland could give no decided answer on tho request for a reduction below Is 4d per 1000 gallons. It was asked that tho price should be brought below Is per 1000 gallons. The matter was left open for a few days and a report would bo made to the Water Board. Mr. Mills said splendid progress had been made in reviewing various propositions. The cost of a supply, based on a capital outlay of £.'50,000, from the Upper Wairau would bo lower than the cost from the city. His opinion was that tho schemes had been narrowed to three —a supply from the city and the Waikahikatoa and Upper Wairau proposals. Tho last-named seemed preferable so far as investigation had gone. Tho engineer was of opinion that tho capital cost of this could be further reduced.
