WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Aratapu Institute members thoroughly enjoyed an address by Miss McKinnon on a trip to Honolulu. The competition —-a renovated felt hat —resulted in a tie for first place. A limerick for roll-call caused mucb .amusement. Dargaville.—Mrs. C. H. Cramp presided over 100 members. Mrs. J. Wyatt, president of the Pukekohe Institute, gave an interesting talk on institute matters. Mrs. H. Culpan, of Wellsford, sang, and Mrs. T,. R. Attwood, of Tangaihi, supplied , music for a competition arranged by Miss Drummond. The dramatic circle produced the impersonation of the " Rudd Family" and "Aunt Lizzie's Friend." Mrs. A. L. Williams was appointed delegate to the Dominion Conference. Dargaville Institute is very fortunate-in securing the membership of Mrs. W. S. Neal from Waiuku. Glen Eden held the fourth birthday social and dance. The institute colours formed a tasteful decoration scheme. Songs, elocutionary items, and a play, " Buying a Birthday Present," were very entertaining. Mrs. Waldron ! cut the birthday cake. ft . Hobsonville had a lecture on "First Aid" by Mrs; Camroell, of the St. JohnAmbulance Brigade. The competitions were for the best jar of jam, best jar of jelly, and vase of flowers in season. Kohekohe-Te Toro received letters from the oversea link, Whalley, and from Sister Esther. A report of,hospital auxiliary work was given, members promising to help as much as possible. Miss D. Cairney read a lecture on health, and diet. The competition, a flour bag brought fourth a record number of entries, most of which are being forwarded to Sister Esther. Maungaturoto exhibited thrift table articles, which created much interest. Members who brought articles of needlework demonstrated, any stitches requested. " Children's Quaint Sayings' drove away dull care. Master Wyn Beasley sang delightfully. A bring-and-buy stall did brisk business. Mangaokewa opened its meeting at Mrs. Dickenson's with the institute creed. Four new members were welcomed. " Children's Quaint Sayings" were given. The competition was for a sugar bag article. An enjoyable ca rd party and ping-pong evening was held at Mrs. Powdrill's. Matakana had a good attendance to hear a lecture upon Maori life around Tokomaru Bay. Mrs. Williams gave the day's motto. Mrs. Becroft (Port Albert) demonstrated , mocassins, and Mrs. Leslie, also of Port Albert, papier mache. The bring-and-buy stall did good business. Mercury Bay .—A letter of for selling poppies was received from the Returned Soldiers' Association, and one from the Hospital Board asking for co-operation in securing the Government subsidy. A- sub-committee was formed to help with a hospital, regatta at Christmas. Miss Acheson, Dominion secretary, graduate of Dunedm_TJniversity, spoke on Foods We, Eat. Mrs. "Hinds read " The Outwittmg of Te Waipapa," by Miss Mellor, and Mrs. Henderson's reminiscences, in,,tne magazine were enjoyed. A sheepskin teddy bear made by a Warkworth member was exhibited, also a specimen of the white butterfly, caught in the locality bv Mr. Topp. Mrs.; Hendry, of Opotiki, and Mrs. Bryan, of Thames, sent donations for the tree-plantmg scheme. £2 6s 2d for the GovernorGeneral's fund was raised from a bringand:buy stall. • .■'
