ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

BRANCH AT PUKEKOHE TWO CLASSES ENROLLED [from our own correspondent] PUKEKOHE, Saturday A public meeting, called by the Mayor of Pukekohe, Mr. J. Routly, decided on the formation of a Pukekohe branch of the St. John Ambulance Association. Over 20 enrolments were received for the men's classes and about 15 for the women's classes. Mr. C. J. Tunks, chairman of the committee, and Mr. S. E. Langstone, manager and chief transport officer of the Auckland Centre, were present. Mr. Tunks said the teaching, which was given by means of lectures in first aid, was useful to everyone by giving sufficient knowledge to deal with accidents and mishaps until tho services of a doctor could be obtained. The knowledge was often sufficient to save life. Mr. Tunks traced the growth of the Order.

The history and work of the Auckland branch was explained by Mr. Langstone. He stated that the branch was the oldest in New Zealand, having been established 41 years ago. There were now 900 men and women attached to the branch, 75 per cent of whom were active and in uniform. There were seven ambulances at the centre, where a 24-liour service was maintained. The association maintained two small cars for the use of the three district nurses, who had attended 43 cases that day. Classes were formed to meet on Thursday evenings. The course comprises six lectures, it being necessary to attend five to qualify for examination. A demonstration of ambulance work was given by four national reserves from Otahulni, in charge of Mr. A. Muller, ambulance officer.

The following committee was elected: essrs. E. G. Moncrief, I/. K. Brown, ft. Slevin, Mesdames J. H. Wyatt, J. F. McArtluir, L. P. Ford, Miss M. H. Hardy and Nurse M. M. Boyd. Mr. G. C. Revell was elected secretary.
