TRAINING AT EPSOM

SOUND WORK ACCOMPLISHED AUTO MACHINE'S SPRINT USEFUL EFFORT BY KELP BY ABAYDOS With the Auckland Trotting Club's Winter Meeting only a little more than a week off local trainers did some solid work with their horses at Epsom on Saturday. The dnt tiuck was available, but the footing was dead, making times generally on the slow side. In a few instances some smart splint efforts were recorded over the last half-mile. A special feature of the work was the i brilliance of Auto Machine, who accomplished the smartest half of the morning, registering 1.5 over the distance. Attractive displays were also given by Peter Pirate, Realty, Kelp, Kewpie's Triumph, Silver Bingen and Moko Girl. Among the novices no horse showed to more advantage than Shining Metal. Auto Machine (A. Brown) went away behind Kelp (W. Willotts) mid Peter Pirate (R. D. Kennerley), and beat them home at tho end of two miles in 4.48, sprinting the last half brilliantly in 1.5, Peter Pirate made play to the mile in *8.29 and had a slight advantage at the mile and a-half in 3.41! 2-5. At the quarter-mile post Auto Machino moved up nnd, taking charge 150 yards from home, finished well clear of Kelp and Peter Pirate. Auto Machine paced freely all the way and unwound a rare burst of speed at the end. He finished full of running and appears to be coming back to his best, form. Kelp was responsible for a effort and when the speed was turned on in the concluding stages he hung on well and ran the last half in I.G. Kelp, who has made eplendid progress lately, will be driven by W. Willelts in the Hobson Handicap. Peter Pirate demonstrated that he is returning to form by covering the two miles in 4.49 3-5, tho last- half in I.G 1-5. Considering that he has only recently been solid work, his display was pleasing. Jester (M. S. Groat), Realty (E. S. Groat), Silver Bingen (R. D. Kennerley) and KewTriumph (J. Gee) went away in the order named from the two mile 3 peg, Kewpie's Triumph conceding Jester five seconds start. Realty finished u shade in front of his companions in 4.49. Jester led for the first mile in 2.30, and was slightly ahead at tho mile and a-lialf in 3.43. Realty then moved up and finished with plqfcity of dash to beat Jester home and run his last halfmile in I.tSJ. Realty was always going (smoothly and when asked for an extra effort at the bottom of the straight responded well. Jester ran the full journey in 4.50, a good effort for a novice. Kewpie's Triumph Pleases Silver Biuaren h'as always well up and when tho speed was right on in the final stages hung on in good style, proving that lu is a better stayer than generally given credit for. Although Kewpie's Triumph did aot quite reach the others at the finish he was responsible for a eolid display, registering 4.41> for the full distance and 1.7 for the last half. He was on the outside in the final stages and did his work well. Shining Metal (R. Morrison) and Student Prince (M. Morrison) jumped away in front of Nellota (L. Mitchell) at the mile and a-quarter post and Shining Metal led throughout to register a smart performance on the dead track. Student Princo and Nellota closed up at tho turn. but Shining Metal held them off to register 1.9 for her last half. Shilling Metal paced more evenly than usual, and is making very satisfactory progress. In registering 2.5S Student Prince gave an improved display and is on the upgrade. Ho is not a. good track worker, but does better in a race. Nellota, having her first run in hopples for some time, showed a. lot of dash when she jnoved rip over the last half, but she could not sustain the effort. The three-year-old has been suffering from a cold. Tinokaha (W. Brain) and Nelson Tasker (J. TnJlock). assisted by Anthony's Pride | (W. T. Dye) and Mnttie Herbihvyn (R. A. Saunders) over the last mile and a-quarter, went a mile and a-half in 3.43'-. Nelson Tasker, who was last at the half-milo post, finished very strongly to register 1.9 for the last half. He is in good heart and with the work he will get in the meantime should be well forward for his Cornwall Handicap engagement. Anthony's Pride ran the mile and a-quarter in 3.1. Mattio Herbilwyu, after being slow to find her feet, was putting in fine work over the last circuit and was handy at the home turn, where she was showing fine speed. Slio then got too close in to the rails nnd broke as the result of ihe eulky wheel coming into contract with a post. The wheel was badly buckled and the sulky collapsed. Mattie Herbihvyn was working well when I the mishap occurred. Moko Girl (W. T. Dye) trotted in solid fashion over a mile and five furlongs, running the last mile in 2.25, and the final half in 1.9. She always works attractivoly on the dirt track, but fails to reproduce her good efforts on the grass. Young Rodney (W. Willetts) trotted steadily over a mile and a-half in 3.57. He was not asked to step along fast until the last lap. which he covered at a 2.30 gait. A plc-iising feature of the three-year-old's performance was the solidness he displayed. Hohoro Goes Well Autumn Lu (G. Stubbs) was going better than Colleen Murphy (K. Morrison) at the end of a mile and a-half in 3.50. There was nothing between them as the mile was passed in 2.37. but after reaching the quar-ter-mile disc Autumn Lu took charge and finished tip by registering 1.13 for the last half. Colleen Murphy recorded 1.15 for the same section, and 3.52 for the full journey. Hukanui (A. O. Ilill), Hohoro (C. G. Lee) and Prince Etawali (R. A. Shepherd) went away in the order named for a mile and a-quarter./Hohoro finishing best in 2.58. Hukanui set a merry pace for six furlongs in 1.48, but crossing the top Hohoro and Prince Etawali wei;e handy to him. Onee in line for homo Hohoro came through with a solid effort to finish in front and record 1.9 for the last half. Prince Etawali ran the last five furlongs at a 2.20 gait. Hukanui, who is on the improve, rail the mile and a-quarter at a 2.25 rate. Etta Cole (C. F. Giesen) trotted several laps at a useful speed. She hit out with plenty of freedom over the final six furlongs, which she covered at a 2.24 gait. Etta Cole is carrying far more condition than usual and. although she has a rough coat at present, ihe prospects of her again etriking form are bright. She will race on the second day of the coming meeting. Peter Griittrin (E. S. Groat) was not out for time while running four circuits imhopplcd. He pulled hard and appeared anxious to go faster when warmed lip to his work. Worthy Chief fli. Laver) had no difficulty in easily holding his full-sister. Worthy Kate (A. J. Julian) at the end of a mile and a-half run a shade better than n 2.40 gait. Going on an extra half-mile alone Worthy Chief hit out freely and registered 1.10. Roi Grande (A. T. Nctvdick) trotted a mile in 2.30 and sprinted a-quarter down the back in Hits. Roi Grande displayed nice speed in the straights, but showed tin inclination to run wide out at the bends. Htanmoor (\V. T. Dye) was not hurried ut any stage of a mile and a-half, which lie covered at a 2.30 speed. He maintained a. steady paco for a mile and a furlong and came over the last three at a 2.25 rate. Golden Huia (L. Mahoney) «was never doing her best while trotting four circuits at a 2.40 gait. The Gold Bell maro has gone on in the right way since winning in May and will be a competitor on the second day of tho winter meeting. Mountain Sun (W. Fleming) trotted boldly over two miles, but ' wag not sent against the watch, lie has furnished into a racy-looking horse and would have prospects among the slow class trotters if he would race as solidly as he goes on the track. J. BRYCE'S ENGAGEMENTS DRIVES AT COMING MEETING Tlie Canterbury reinsmun J. Biyce, who drove Kewpie's Triumph to victory in the Fergtfsson and Paniitoetoe Handicaps at the Auckland Trotting Club's May meeting, will be a visitor to Epsom for the winter meeting, to bo held at Alexandra Park on .lime 21 and 24. Bryco. who is coming North to drive Red Hope, with whom he scored a win at. the Cambridge meeting, will again lie associated with Kewpie's Triumph in his engagements. In addition he will drive Molf Girl. OWNERS MISS ACCEPTANCES The only defections from tho trotting events on the first day of tho Auckland Trotting Club's Winter Meeting were Golden JI ii in. in the Winter Handicap and Roi Grande and Etta Cole iu the tftewardw' Handicap. The owners of the horses intended accepting with them, but all three were too late in making the acceptance. The trotters mentioned will take part on the second day.
