EXTRACTS FROM THE HERALD GOVERNMENT HOUSE AREA The following are extracts from the Nf.w Zealand Herald of Juno 12, 18S3: — * It is estimated that there are at present 150,000 men enrolled as Fenians in the United Kingdom, distinct from, but often co-operating with, the Fenians in America ami the Societv of lnvincibles, besides local secret societies, ribbon men and Molly Maguires who furnish recruits to larger bodies of the dynamite party. The Pope is forwarding to all Roman Catholic bishops in the colonies decrees and instructions relating to Irish affairs, which he has issued for the Irish hierarchy. Wahanui, Taonui and other. Nfpttimaniapoto chiefs were at Alexandra on Monday. Wahanui is busy getting a petition signed for presentation to Parliament, praying that their lands should not be interfered with or passed through the Land Court by any company now in the field. The report is prevalent that bodies have been stolen from the Kawhia caves and forwarded to Auckland, and has caused great excitement. Mr. Bell has given notice that ho will move the following resolution ab the next meeting of the City Council:— * " That the council petition the Government against the alienation of any portion of . Government House reserve for any purpose whatsoever, believing it would detract from its usefulness aa a residence for the Governor." There is already a reserve for the university elsewhere.
