WAIKATO CHAMPIONSHIPS PURDIE WINS WELTER TITLE [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Saturday The Waikato boxing championships wore held in the Y.M.C.A. stadium this afternoon and evening under the auspices of the Hamilton Dosing Association. About CO boxers from all parts of the province com peted, this number being a lecord. From the spectators' point of view the tournament was the most successful held hero in recent years, a largo proportion of the bouts being keen and scientific. Tho most outstanding boxer was W. Purdie, of Auckland, who won tho welter-weight division. Tho winner of tho fly-weight class, A. Burgess, of Pjipakura, was also prominent and easily^,accounted for tho other boys at his weight. Tho I3rcmtoii Memorial Cup for tho most scientific boxer was won by It. Wilson, of Hamilton, who was successful in tho bantam-weight class. There was a good attendance of the public at both the afternoon and evening session. Tho referees were Mr. F. Williams, of Auckland, and Mr. C. Craig, of lo Awamutu. The resultn were as follows: Paper-weight.—R. Bowler, Hamilton, 7st 51b, beat It. Ivilleen, Auckland, 7st 6lb, on points. Fly-weight.—A. Burgess. Papakura, Bst. beat C. Belcher, Auckland, Bst, on points. Final: Etirgess boat A. McGregor, Auckland, 7st 1241b, on points. McGregor made a plucky showing against a more experienced man and was warmly applauded by the crowd. Bantam-weight.—First round. R. Wilson, Hamilton, Bst 6lb, beat E. P. Bongard. Hamilton, Bst slb, on points. Semi-final: R. Wilson beat E. Evans, To Awamutu, Bst 31b. on points. Final: Wilson beat C. Belcher, Auckland, Bst, on points. Feather-weight.—lt. Smith, Auckland, 9st. beat B. Muttoa, Hamilton, 9st, on a technical knock-out in tho second round. Final: Smith boat W. Carter, Matamata. Bst 12lb. Light-weight.—First round: J. Boper, Manunui, 9st slb, beat O. M. Smith, Horotiu, 9st 9lb, on points: T. McGovey, Otorohanga, 9st sjb, beat G. Gordon, Thames, Bst 131b, on points: V. Caltaux, Te Awamutu, 9st Sib, beat N. McGregor, Auckland, 9st. Blb, on points; C. Worrall, To Aroha, 9st Gib, beat N. McCoy, Iluntly, 9st 9lb, on points. Semi-finals: Worrall beat Caltaux on points; N. McKenna, Auckland, 9st 6lb, beat McGovey on a knock-out in tho second round: Worrall beat Roper on points. Final: Worrall beat McKenna. The referee called for a fourth round, and Worrall won by a narrow margin of points. Welter-weight.—First round: C. McKnight, Hamilton. JOst 4lb, beat J. McCoy. Auckland, lOst 31b, on points; C. Saunders, Ngaruawaliia, lOst 2lb, beat H. Graham, Otofohanga, 9st 13lb, on a knock-out in the first round; H. Ross, Papakura, lOst 2lb, beat G. Cook, Papakura, lOst lib, on points. Semi-finals: W. Purdie. Auckland, 9st lllb, beat Saunders on points; McKnight beat Ross on points: Purdie beat H. Andrews, Pio Pio, lOst 21b, on a technical knock-out in tho second round. Final: Purdie beat McKnight,on points. This bout was fought at a great pace, and McKnight, who had had his left eye closed up earlier in the tournament, lost by a small margin of points. Middle-weight.—First round: J. 'Maxim. Hamilton,, list slb, beat F. Lindsay, Papakura, list 10lb. on points; .T. Thornton, Glen Massey, lOst 131b, beat H. Andrews. Pio Pio, lOst 21b, on points; C. Farmer, Te Aroha, list Clb, beat W. Payne; To Aroha, list 6lb, on points. Semi-final: J. Thornton beat Maxim ■on points. Final: Farmer beat Thornton. Thornton make his best showing in the tournament, but could not counteract the disadvantage in weight. Light-heavy-weight.—H. Hepburn. To Aroha. 12st Gib, beat J. Flynn, Hamilton, 12st slb, on points. Final. Hepburn beat W. Payne, Te Aroha, list Gib. Hepburn was a stone heavier than his opponent, and the referee stopped the bout late in the first round. Heavy-weight.—C. Farmer, Te Aroha, list Gib, beat Hapeta, Rotorua, 12st lllb, on a technical knock-out in the second round. Final: Farmer beat J. Flynn, Hamilton, list slb, on points.
