WAIKATO CHAMPIONSHIPS PURDIE WINS WELTER TITLE [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Saturday The Waikato boxing championships wore held in the Y.M.C.A. stadium this afternoon and evening under the auspices of the Hamilton Dosing Association. About CO boxers from all parts of the province com peted, this number being a lecord. From the spectators' point of view the tournament was the most successful held hero in recent years, a largo proportion of the bouts being keen and scientific. Tho most outstanding boxer was W. Purdie, of Auckland, who won tho welter-weight division. Tho winner of tho fly-weight class, A. Burgess, of Pjipakura, was also prominent and easily^,accounted for tho other boys at his weight. Tho I3rcmtoii Memorial Cup for tho most scientific boxer was won by It. Wilson, of Hamilton, who was successful in tho bantam-weight class. There was a good attendance of the public at both the afternoon and evening session. Tho referees were Mr. F. Williams, of Auckland, and Mr. C. Craig, of lo Awamutu. The referee called for a fourth round, and Worrall won by a narrow margin of points. Welter-weight.—First round: C. McKnight, Hamilton. JOst 4lb, beat J. McCoy. Auckland, lOst 31b, on points; C. Saunders, Ngaruawaliia, lOst 2lb, beat H. Graham, Otofohanga, 9st 13lb, on a knock-out in the first round; H. Ross, Papakura, lOst 2lb, beat G. Cook, Papakura, lOst lib, on points. Semi-finals: W. Purdie. Auckland, 9st lllb, beat Saunders on points; McKnight beat Ross on points: Purdie beat H. Andrews, Pio Pio, lOst 21b, on a technical knock-out in tho second round. Final: Purdie beat McKnight,on points. This bout was fought at a great pace, and McKnight, who had had his left eye closed up earlier in the tournament, lost by a small margin of points.
