THE ASSOCIATION GAME

AUCKLAND DEFEATS NAVY MARGIN OF TWO GOALS SPLENDID CONTEST WITNESSED Scintillating Soccer, in which clever tactics, robust tackling and clean passing were outstanding features, was witnessed in tho meeting of Auckland and tho Navy at Blandford. Park on Saturday, when the local representatives secured a well-deserved victory by three goals to one. It was a game full' of incidents, both teams countering at a speed which kept tho spectatora at a, high pitch of excitement throughout. In fspitp of previous heavy rain the playing surface was in good condition. Weakness in finishing cost both sides goals, but Auckland had just that slight superiority which was reflected by the margin in the final iscore. Following were the teamß: Auckland.—Cowie, H. Stone, , Stewart, Chapman, Jones, Davis, Innes, Dunsmore, Spencer, Hislop, Skinner, Navy.—Houton, Pre3ton, Orr, Clarke, Lund, Wilke3, Jiiwan, McNally, H. Clarke, Tito, Scot t. Play opened, promisingly, the players swinging the ball about with direction and precision and Auckland, finding its feet first, marshalled its cffeE.sivo _ forces and stormed down on the Nary citadeL Dunsmore opened up play in a pretty manner and the ball was pushe l through to Spencer, but tho Navy backs had anticipated and, moviing up, put the Auckland centre off-side. Lund came into prominence with a bright piece of initiative work, which was helped along by Clarke, but when Scott was given. possession he failed to get the ball across. The Navy goalmouth now; became the scene of a number of exciting -exchanges,, the Auckland van co-opurating in a manner which promined reward. Innes prettily beat two defenders and pivoted to send the ball across to Spencer, . wLo_ in turn sent through to Skinner for the winsman to whip in a low shot, which eluded the goalkeeper. Weak Shooting This goal had a further stimulating effect on the exchanges and Auckland very nearly went ahead again when Skinner centred nicely and Dunsmore only had to tap the ball into the net, but shot weakly past. Again, Mnncs manoeuvred on the right and dropped in a beautiful lob, which had Houton grasping uncertainly, but Orr got back to clear. Tho Navy forward line showed its attacking capabilities, Tite dribbling through the Auckland halves and handing on to H. Clarke, who (vas just stopped from bursting through by Stone. An exploiting forward kick by Hislop had an unexpected result when the Navy goalkeeper fumbled iind Skinner, ever vigilant far an opportunity, rushed in to net. Hitting back strongly the Navy half-line nlayed all over its respective Auckland opponents for several minutes and H. Clarke received to swivel quickly and send in & great drive, which beat Cowie and soared into the top of the net. The Auckland goalkeeper had anticipated the direction of the shot, but delayed his dive just a second too late.

"With both Auckland wings playing brilliantly, Skinner particulaily, Auckland kept the Navy on the defensive for a time, but the staunch defending of the backs gav© Tito an opportunity to let Scott away, th« last-named bringing Cowie .out to handla. The- Navy had several fine opportunities, but could not provide the necessary finish. The interval came with the ecore:—Auckland, 2; Navy, 1. There was no slackening in the pace on. resuming, tlie Navy side forcing matters in an endeavour to equalise, white Auckland was just as determined to increase its lead. Skinner on the Auckland left was, by dash and clever foot-work, breaking through th' Navy defence and one particularly brilliaT t ran saw him centre right across the goalmouth to Innes who, with plenty of time to steady and shoot, made a very weak attempt to score, the ball trickling behind. 'Defence Well Tested

Coming again Skinner moved away under Hislop's direction and sent in a fine left foot drive, which the Navy goalkeeper failed to hold and as the ball rebounded Dunsmore followed up fast to ecore. Not daunted by the enlarged deficit Navy hit back with a series of strong raids, which had Auckland defending desperately. Scott received several great opportunities on the left, but contrary to his_ usual style he failed to gather the ball in his 6t:ride and the Auckland backs had time to bottle the movements. Clarke and Lund in the halves etrQve desperately to add more force to the Navy onslaughts and repeatedly broke through themselves in a. frantic endeavour to net. The Navy defence, too, had tightened up considerably and the Auckland forwards were being' given little scope for activity. There was an exciting moment for Auckland when Cowie was called out of his keep by a shot and during his absence the ball was returned quickly and a melee ensued in the goalmouth. Clarke, Tite and McNally aU made efforts to net the ball, hut an Auckland back eventually got his foot to it arid cleared. The closing stages wer* strenuously contested, but the end came with the score:—Auckland, 1: Navy, 1. Mr. E. Parkinson waa referee.
