PAPATOETOE AFFAIRS
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE A report on the year's activities of the Papatoetoe Chamber of Commerce was presented by the president, Mr. H. M. Didsbury, at the fifth annual meeting held on Monday evening. . The report stated that an endeavour had been made to--obtain a lightening of the unemployment emergency tax on income in respect of aged people with limited means. After protracted representations the Minister*- had given an assurance that the matter would be given favourable consideration immediately any relief was possible. Early in the year, the report continued, a suggestion had been put forward by the chamber that a taxpayers' association should be formed throughout the Dominion. The aim of the association would be to have an organisation that would embrace wide public opinion on national affairs affecting the whole [people. The proposal had not been favourably received at the conference of the Franklin combined Chambers of Commerce, but considerable progress bad been made. A few months ago a new movement, the New Zealand Legion, had been launched, and its objectives were in many ways similar to the Papatoetoe proposal. The report suggested that the chamber should support the legion activities. The report was adopted and. the executive was thanked for its work. A resolution was adopted requesting the Papatoetoe Town Board to take steps to oppose any alteration in the bus service terminus for the district. Mr. Didsbury was re-elected president, and the vice-presidents elected were Messrs. T. R. Smythenian and A. McComb.
