EVENTS AT DUNEDIN

MEETING OPENS TO-DAY THE OTAGO STEEPLECHASE DETAILS OF' THE FIELDS Tlio winter meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club opens at Wingatui to-day. Telegraphing last evening our Dunedin correspondent stated that heavy rain had set in "and would mako the goiinT heavy for tho opening of thj ineeting. Deportment was regarded as a non-starter in the Steeplechase as a result of developing lameness. The following horses were likely to be well supported: Maiden IMate.—Heather Glow, Money Gran, Tea Garden, Brighton Handicap.—Kemal Pasha, Polydora, Reminder. Provincial Handicap.—Red Racer, Mount Boa, Sulmo Salar. Otago Steeples,—Barrington, Diamond Jack, .Calham. Tradesmen's Handicap.—Palantua, Water Power, Silver Streak. June Hurdles.—Morena, Hounslqw, Gold Knight. St. Clair Handicap.—Shock. Grand Finale, Mayam. Repudiation is a doubtful starter. Winter Handicap.—Sailing Home, Zcebrngge, Lochard. Following are the acceptances:—

HAWERA TRACK ITEMS HORSES FOR OTAKI MEETING [from our own correspondent] HAWERA, Monday Little Doubt is a good winter track horse arid has made great improvement lately. He is nicely placed in the Raukawa Cup at Otaki and should run a good race. Since winning twice at I'reutham in January Chief Line has performed indifferently, but he is now in nice condition and has only to reproduce track-form to run prominently- Weatherzane, in the same ownership, will be having liia first outing in the maiden race at Otaki. He has speed, but is a bad nctioned galloper. With track conditions suitable, The Tiger is to start at Otaki and ns he is in splendid racing condition he should be a likely proposition ill the six furlongs sprint. W. Pine is keeping Tentcall going, and she has been schooled over a few fences, shaning well for a beginner. Attentive, who is a good type for hurdling, has also been given some schooling, shaping satisfactorily. Instalment, who injured himself while galloping before the Wanganui meeting, lias not quite recovered and R. Brough could not lake him to Otaki. Aga Khan is to be spelled, but C. Jackson is keeping Diagano in steady exercise. Diagano is developing splendidly and promises to be useful next season. J. Fryer is regularly working Oriel, the big half-brother by Nigger MSnslrel to Benzora. Oriel is promising, and works very resolutely. He is a typical sort to make a jumper, having plenty of size. The maiden St. Clara, who has 'been spelled since the Hawera meeting, will be brought in shortly to bo prepared for early spring racing. Richfield is doing light, exercise and appears to have got- over his soreness. Miss Cavendish is being spelled, and O. C'ox will soon handle his Australian-bred yearling, by Friarsdale from tho New Zea-land-bred mam Fluency.

HAWERA'S TWO CANDIDATES INTEREST IN FINAL WORK [ I ROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] HAWEIIA, Monday "Special interest was taken in the filial work of Carfcx and Co ( »jy before leaving for Auckland. Carfcx. who looks in great condition, was associated with Chief Lino and Little Doubt over seven furlongs. The three horses carried light-weights and went on the course proper about 12 feet out from the rails, the. going being very heavy. Caricx. on the inside, began smartest and was responsible for the pace, the first three furlongs being covered in 40js, and four in 54 l-ss. After five furlongs Carfex was definitely in front and ho went on to beat Little Doubt, by three lengths in 1.38 2-5, with Chief Lino a similar distance away. Since racing at the Hawera meeting Copey has done a lot of solid pace-work, but little jumping. He is in great heart and hit out well over a couple of rounds on the sand track. Copey looks in better condition than when he left Hawera last vear to contest the Great Northern Steeplechase, and everything points to him having a great chance of repeating Ins success. CHOPIN'S WOODVILLE TRIP MISHAP ON THE JOURNEY The motor-float conveying Chopin to the Woodville meeting last Saturday broke down, and the horse reached tl» course only just in time to take his place in th« Jubilee Cup field. Through the mishap lie colours went astray and he ran in the colours of Mr. H. T. Hume. The _apprentice jockey J. Green was also involved and arrived too late to take the ride, which wont to G Kidgway. Whether the miihao affected Chopin or not the fact is that he was never-a possibility. The ground would be against him. and probably lie will not be raced again on soft tracks. The owner- ♦ miner W J- Wood is making a slow recovery from his seizure at Stratford on a° ril l and except for a brief visit to Waipawft lias been confined to his home. VISIT OF C. JENKINS C Jenkins, who won the Auckland Cup on \ll Red in 1908 and 1009, has arrived at Fllcrslie with Autumn Dawn, an aged geldby Starstream from Saitoste. In the nantriUkei Hack Handicap, hi fur., at Bulls m March 8. Autumn Dawn was narrcwly on Mnl F" f : r King. He is engaged in the Carbine Plate next Monday and the Orakci Hurdles on U ednesday.
