AUSTRALIAN EXCHANGE UNWARRANTED BY TRADE Comment on the maintenance of an exchange rate of 25 per cent between London and Australia was made by Mr. Howard \V. Lloyd, chairman of directors of the Bank of Adelaide, at the annual meeting of shareholders. " It has been clear for a great many months that thp rate is an artificial one, maintained at its present level not as a result of trade demand for and supply of London funds, but as an indirect and admittedly useful bonus to primary production," Mr. Lloyd said. " it is, however, pleasing that the rate has not been further artificially manipulated —or 'managed'—to a higher level, and we congratulate the Commonwealth Bank Board on its firm stand. Any suspicion that political or outside pressure had unduly influenced the actions of the Commonwealth Bank Board would at once destroy the confidence which it now enjoys and adversely affect it effectively functioning as a central reserve bank."
