BOOKMAKING ALLEGED
CASE AT NEW PLYMOUTH ONE CHARGE HELD PROVED [by telegraph —press association! NEW PLYMOUTH. Tuesday As the outcome of a police raid in Taranaki on March 18, the date of the Wellington and Ohinemuri races, Robert Mascall was charged in the Supreme Court yesterday before Mr. Justice Reed with bookmaking in "New Plymouth. Evidence was given for the Crown that a constable made bets with Mascall cil hotel premises, and that Mascall, ■when arrested, made a significant remark concerning a "punter's" money' ■which he had in his possession. Betting paraphernalia was also found. Counsel for the defence emphasised lack of corroboration. Mascall was found guilty on one charge and not guilty on four others. As in' previous cases at the session the Judge noted objections to the admission of certain evidence for argument in the Appeal Court if necessary.
