TROUT FISHING

SEASON ENDS TO-DAY ROTORUA AND TAUPO IMPROVEMENT IN QUALITY The season for trout fishing in the Taupo and Rotorua districts will closo to-day, the closed period extending until November 1. Anglers report that splendid fishing has been obtained throughout the season, the quality of the fish having shown marked improvement. During the past few seasons comment frequently has been made as to the poor condition of the trout in Lake Taupo in November and December, but in the season now closing there has been little causo for any such comments. Magnificent dry 11 y fishing has been obtained throughout the season on the Waikato ltiver, from the Huka Falls to Taupo, this fishing being regarded by overseas anglers as the finest of its kind in the world. The annual run of fish tap the Tongariro and other rivers draining into Lake Taupo recently commenced. These rivers during the past few weeks have yielded splendid fishing to anglers, although tho heavy floods which occurred in the Tongariro during April for some time interfered with sport. The day of the f twenty-pounder appears to have passed, but a number of fish weighing ten pounds and over have recently been taken from the Waitahanui and other rivers emptying into Lake Taupo. Anglers in the Rotorua district have had very fine fishing. During the past few weeks the Oliau channel in particular has yielded fish comparable, in the opinion of many anglers, to those obtainable at Taupo and on the Tongariro.
