COURSING

OPENING CARNIVAL HELD The opening carnival of the Auckland Coursing Club's '1033 season was held nt-the Otahuhu enclosure, Mangero Crossing, on Saturday afternoon. Perfect weather prevailed ■ and the;e was a good attendance. Well-trained 'greyhounds and strong hares were seen in action, and the coursing proved interesting throughout. Theire were no undecided courses, or' no-coursfea, and with, the various trials got of! with cornmendablo despatch, the 'deciding race was over slightly before four o'clock. The management of the carnival was excellent, while tho prompt decisions : of the judge, Mr. F. McConnell, and tho ■ smart deliveries of the slipper, Mr. Roy Polkinghorne, were featurea of the afternoon. Red Heather, the pripie fancy for tho first Maiden Stakes, defeated his brother, Ginger's Hope, in the second tieß, and was looked upon as a, sure winner of the deciding course, but ho failed against the muchimproved and better-conditioned Irish Beauty, who led him, turned near the escapes, drove tho hare to cover and won I by three points to nil, the trial taking 24 [ seconds. The hares were strong and gave the hounds an excellent chase.
