DAVIS CUP CONTEST ST. LUKE'S CONCEDES POINT DRAWN GAME WITH UNIVERSITY St. Luke's received the first check in ita formerly unbroken succession cf wins when, in tho fourth round of iho Davis Cup hockey competition on Saturday, it had to concede equal honours to University in a hard and interesting match. The game was one of tho best seen this season. Fielding a somewhat disorganised team, Training College put up a strong fight against North Shore, and only superior work by tho backß enabled tlio latter- team to bo successful by threo goals to ono. At Papatoetoe, Somervillo and the local team met in an enjoyable open. game, tho visitors winning by four goals to ono. Primary school hockey was recommenced in Auckland on Saturday after somo years' lapso, fivo teams taking part iu tho competitions. Tho following table shows the position of tho teams in tho senior competition:— Points Ch. P. W. L. D. F. Ag. Pta. STRONG DEFENCE WORK FORWARDS' ATTACKS BROKEN Strong work by both teams' defence lines was a feature of the hard-fought game in which St. Luke's drew with University, each side scoring two goals. Although repulsed regularly on tho circle edge, both vans worked hard. From tho point of view of lost chances the game was disappointing, but was open and fast. After a temporary attack by tho students' forwards, who wero foiled when Ross lifted his stick too high. St. Luko's forced its way down to the other end, where hj, hard scrummage followed in the circle. Captain Brown made a good save in sending back a tricky shot from Torbet. Play drifted back to half-way and then Watson opened tho way for Ross and Philpott to race into St. Luko's quarters. A stinging shot from Philpott was. admirably blocked by Wattam. and St. Luko'a retaliated with a combined attack, which was greatly strengthened by tho strong support of tho backs, who wero playing an aggressive game at this stage. After a strenuous tussle in tho students' goalmouth Robertson. right half, shot fast into tho net. St. Luko's again took charge for a period, but tho students' defence held and play drifted back again to hall-way. Tho students initiated a series of attacks, but could not break through until A. Broun, showing clover stick-work in a solo effort, beat several dofenders and sent a rising shot from a difficult anglo into the net, equalising tho score, 'lorbet led tho St. Luke's forwards down tho field, but ho lost control of the ball to Robinson, and although tho goal was almost undefended, there was no one to follow up and tho chanco wu3 missed. Torbet again led tho field, the attack breaking down onco more in the circlo through tho good work of the students' fullbacks, Brown and Robinson. At half-time the score was:—St. Luko's, 1; University. 1. University attacked from the opening of tho second spell and St. Luko's was driven to its last lino of dcfonco. Dowling and Burnett did good work and an attack they opened up was finished off by A. Broun, who found tho net. St. Luko's opened up a series of sorties, Graco and Corin doing good work on the left. Brown, the students' right fullback, and Captain Brown, in tho goalmouth, wero too resourceful. A period of hard hitting ensued. With tho forwards dominated by tho backs, play bccamo mors ragged. Dowling made an opening for the University forwards with a tino centre, but Brown and Philpott both missed easy chances of shooting. St. Luke's immediately shifted play to tho other end and the students suffered many narrow escapeß. Aftor somo minutes of hard givo-and-tuko play in_ the St. Luko's quarters, Corin seized his opportunity and broko through to score St. Luke's long-fouglit-for goal only a few minutes before tho final whistle. With the score even, both teams redoubled their attacks and tho final stages were played nt high speed. A promising opening by Dowling was swung by Philpott to tho sido of tho post and play returned to midfield, whore it hotered at tho final whistle, tho scores remaining:—St. Luke's 2: University, 2. Messrs. A. E. Playlo and E. J. Hewitt wero referees. NORTH SHORE WINS GOOD GOALKEEPING The match in which North Shoro defeated Training College by three goals to ono was a keen struggle. The moro experienced play of tho North Shoro defence proved too strong for the students' onslaughts. Chadwick, the Training College goalkeeper, dofended outstandingly, using his pads in fine stylo. North Shore took possession of the ball from tho opening, carrying it down to tho circlo, where Chadwick stopped a hard shot by H. Jones. Tho Training College forwards then cleared. Quickly gaining ground, a penalty corner at North Shore's goal resulting. North Shoro advanced from a froe-hit and tho Training College circlo was invaded. After a few momenta of exciting play P. Anthony gained control and sent the ball into tho net. Training College opened up an attack, forcing a clearing down the right, and North Shoro had to defond. Play drifted back to midfield and after somo moments of uneventful play. North Shoro raced down the field, entrusting P. Anthony to shoot. Smart work by Chadwick in the goalmouth resulted in play being shifted out of the dangor zone. The ball was soon taken back to the students' quarters, whero, after a combined movement, H. Jones pushed through and netted North Shore's second goal a few minutes before lialf-timo. Tho score at tho interval was:—North Shoro, 2; Training College. 0. For the first 10 minutes of tho second spell play ranged up and down tho field in a series of hard-hitting attacks, fow of which appeared to be dangerous. Training College at last opened its account when, after a keen tusslo in tho goalmouth. McNaughton saw his chanco and netted. Training College continued to press, but finally if. Jones sent A. Anthony down tho field and Chadwick was called on to save a. shot from P. Anthony. After a period of ragged play North Shoro took control of the ball and the students wero called on to defond vigorously. Pickens cleared for Training College, but an attack was mado by the Anthony brothers, which was mot by a stubborn defence. Eventually Iraining College had to concede a penalty corner P Anthony turning it to account with a fast shot. Tho final score was:— North Shore. 3: Training Collego. 1. Messrs. C. Preston and A. Rivers were referees.

DEFEAT OF PAPATOETOE SOMERVILLE NOT EXTENDED Playing without its star performer, M. Bay, as centre-forward, Papatoetoo did well in going down to Sotncrvillc by only lour goals to one. Although Somerville was not extended, Papatoetoe kept tho game moving speedily and tho match, played at 1 apatoetoe, was a very fair exhibition of hockey. In the very first movements, Bay collided with Gregson. both suffering severely, and Bay was unable to return to the field. At tho restart of play E. Watts led the Somervillo forwards down the field, finishing off with a ehot which resulted in a corner, from which Gregson opened Somervillo's account. McKenzie turned back a Somerville attack and sent L Smytheuian down tho right. The Papatoetoo forward was unlucky in just missing with his shot. Somerville shifted play to the other end, Neild being called on to save. From the corner, however. Wellbourne followed in and scored Somervillo's second goal shortly before halftime. Papatoetoo was again forced back at tho opening of tho second spell and after a tussle in the goalmouth. Gregson found the net again for Somerville. Papatoetoo, with three goals against it, brightened up considerably and a period of close piny ensued. Finally L. Smytheman broke away to open Papntoetoe's score with a clever individual goal. Papntoetoe kept up tho pressure for a period, but without, success, and just before time E. Watts notched Somervillo's fourth score. A shot a few moments later by C. Watts went over tho top and the game ended with the score:—Somervillo, 4; Pnpatoetoe, 1. Messrs. Williams and Rankin were referees.
